Default 40S&W and 9MM Carry Ammo Recomendations

From member Repins.......

You have an HK logo near/on some of your posts. My "primary" carry gun is a USP-Compact in .40 cal. Is there any JHP you'de recommend over others, or more importantly "recommend against"? I keep it loaded w/ Golden Saber most of the time. I also have a decent amount of Winchester Ranger LE subsonic stuff.

Last question for you....what's your opinion of subsonic 147 grain 9mm ammo when used in a Beretta Model 92? The gun is "like new" and probably has less than 1500 rounds thru it. Seems like lots of guys out there say "no" any 9mm ammo heavier than 124 grains. Pls advise. Thanx.

I love the Ranger SXT in both 9mm and 40S&W. I also think the heavier grain "147" 9mm is not a problem in a Beretta 92 either. But it does seem the 124 grain 9mm are popular in +p for a lot of Sub Compacts.

A slow heavy bullet works best. 147 sub is that. Best Choice for a 9mm.

Your 92, DO NOT run +P+ thru it. That gun has major problem with it's locking block, the ears break off. Then there are the problem with the slide breaking in two.

I don't own a 9mm but if I did I'd take CCWI's advice.

Heavy bullets go deeper. If they open up and retain their weight like HST's and Ranger's, they do a lot more damage which means faster incapacitation.

In .40, I really like the new HST 180 gr. They seem milder shooting than the 165 Ranger's I was using and according to the tests they have seen, the OCSD range staff says they really open up nicely.

I did own a 9mm.

When my 9 milli wouldn't knock down the plates and pepperpots while shooting IPSC, I had to stop and wonder if it would effectively knock down a Bad Guy.

Thats when I took CCWI's advice...and I bought a Kimber!

Now I can knock down steel plates and pepperpots til the cows come home

I had the same "Moment of illumination", or deductive reasoning. After that
I kept only one 9mm handgun for sentimental reasons and because 9mm is a useful round if in a foreign country. I sold all others.
I promised myself that for self defense I would not use anything smaller than a .40 S&W caliber. If a 9mm can't barely knock down an iron target then I reasoned that for self defense, well.....Fugget about it!!!!!

Gotta love 9mm as a range gun though. Cheap ammo! I walked out of WalMart the other day with 1,500 rounds of WWB

That's why I love my Buckmark... it feels very similar to my Springfield.

Economics aside. I try to train the way I fight as much as possible.
I can understand the reality of economics.

I agree...but there is also something to be said about the platform stability you can develop by training with a .22lr or snapcaps...
