Default Kimber: Ultra CDP vs Ultra Carry II

I'm confused. What's the difference? It's hard to tell from the pictures and the website doesn't really allow for a side by side comparison of features.

I've been drooling over the Ultra Carry II stainless, but I'm guessing the CDP is better?

CDP is custom shop. It has the following different characteristics

30LPI front strap
Carry meld slide
tighter fitting gun
aluminum trigger
two-tone exterior w/ wood grips

This is how i best explain it.

Ultra Carry II is a Corvette

Ultra CDP II is a Corvette Z06

Checkering on the front strap and trigger guard on the UCDP, Stainless Steel slide on the UCDP vs steel on the UC, Meprolite Tritium sights on the UCDP, melding on the UCDP. That's about it. Oh yeah and what Mikey said about the custom shop thing while I was typing.

The "ultra" designation just means 3" barrel and compact (shorter) grip.

The CDP is almost the same gun, but with a few upgrades:

* Front-strap checkering
* Slide is "carry melted" with all the rough edges taken off
* Ambi safety (many say this is a must on a carry 1911)
* Slide/Barrel/Frame are custom-shop fit for improved accuracy (the UC2 is more of a 'production' fit; still accurate, less break-in required)
* Different finish: The UC2 is all black, the CDP2 is Stainless slide/black frame/wood grips (the UC2 stainless is the same as the CDP in color except the grips)
* Night sights: Standard on CDP2, optional on UC2

I think that about covers it. Both are good guns, but if you wanted to do all the upgrades to a UC2 it would cost more than a CDP. If you just wanted the UC2 with an Ambi safety it'd be cheaper (but you'd miss out on the carry melt, how big a deal that is to you is subjective). I seem to recall you once saying you didn't like the front grip serrations, so you might want to try handling both if you can to compare. You're welcome to borrow my CDP2 on any range night, but there's probably half a dozen CDP2s at any given range night

Either way, plan on an extra $90 or so in Wilson Combat magazines and chuck the terrible Kimber ones right away.

I shoot lefty, so the ambi safety is a must for me.

I don't know what this stuff means:

30LPI front strap
Carry meld slide
aluminum trigger (as opposed to what, and why is aluminum better?)
Stainless Steel slide on the UCDP vs steel on the UC (what's the difference?)

And a question:

Libertarian said "Different finish: The UC2 is all black, the CDP2 is Stainless slide/black frame/wood grips (the UC2 stainless is the same as the CDP in color except the grips)"

The UC2 is also available in a stainless (all silver color) finish, which is the one I was looking at. I'm guessing the CDP2 does not have an option for a silver-colored frame?

30LPI front strap checkering in front of the frame (30 Lines Per Inch
Carry meld slide the slide is rounded for better carring purposes, doesn't snap on the holster
aluminum trigger (as opposed to what, and why is aluminum better?)
Stainless Steel slide on the UCDP vs steel on the UC (what's the difference?) Ultra Carry and Ultra CDP are both aluminum. they both weigh the SAME. 25oz w/o magazine

CDP only comes blk/slvr and Carry II only comes in blk OR slvr

you can have it anodized any color you want after you purchase it.

For a great chart showing the features, download the catalog
http://www.kimberamerica.com/downloads/Catalog_08.pdf
"http://www.kimberamerica.com/downloads/Catalog_08.pdf"
on page 55 of the catalog (pg 28 of the PDF) you will see a chart showing all the features in a nice matrix format...it may be helpful.

I have both and prefer the cdp. But I will have to admit my UC2 has a better slide to frame fit.

Both FRAMES are aluminum. The UC2 has a steel slide, and the CDP has a stainless steel slide. Most people don't care about slide material. Some hate stainless for various reasons. Others prefer stainless for an everyday carry gun since it does not rust very easily...
