Default Range Report: Kimber Ultra CDP II

I finally had the chance to take my spanking new Kimber CDP II to the range today. I put 100 rounds through it (WWB 230gr FMJ) and it only had 2 FTFs. This was with my new Wilson mags too. Hopefully it doesn't do that once it is broken in.

I was surprised at how loud this gun was! I brought the whole room at the Firing Line to a stand still when I started firing it. Overall, it was very accurate, but I found myself shooting up and to the left. I never do that, but I was shooting all day today with another gun so I was probably adjusted to that.

I plan on completely breaking this in this week, so I will see how I adjust to it. I am very impressed with how well this gun shoots! Even with my big hands, the grip on this gun is incredible.

Good for you Spicy. With my ultra, i got a dozen or so ftf's through about round number 750 or so. With the pro, i've put about 425 through it to date - i didn't have any problem for the last 100 rounds or so, but have had a few ftf's and a couple of double feeds. YMMV....

What ammo were you using? My Wilson has FTF's with their crappy overpriced reloads. Never a problem with anything else.

Edit: reread post. Surprised that WWB gave you a problem.

The Kimber CDP II's are just so stinkin tight from the factory. It just needs a little breaking in. I think most all folks have seen this issue until the guns are broken in. Don't sweat it unless it runs past 750 rounds, then talk to a guy... he might need to take a peak at it.

Tight guns do need to have the parts wear together for proper fit. Once yours is finally broken in... The gun will positively SING for you.

Mine was perfect from first shot. Got aout 700 rounds (WWB) through it so far without any hiccups. It's a great gun! I guess I was lucky.

I put about 150 through mine at the last range day and it had no problems. I had problems with my Kimber Warrior, though.

Oh yeah, I also forgot to mention this. About five of the shells came back and hit me right in the forehead when they were being ejected. I read somewhere about this being an issue with a weak extractor. Anyone know if that is correct? All other empty casings ejected just fine.

Spicy,

I believe the 'empty hits forehead' is typically an extracter problem. I read something about this on the m1991.org forum and it was a hot topic.

From the forum:

Typical reasons for ejected brass to hit you in the face
  • Improperly tuned extractor, there's more to it than just tension.
  • Extractor rotating in its tunnel.
  • Ejector not properly shaped.
  • Shock buffer installed (don't put these in guns shorter than Government length).
  • Improper tension on the recoil spring.
  • Any combination of the above.

And never to be forgotten, "limp wristing". Not always equipment problems, sometimes it's the operator. Just my $.02

At a training class today I traded with a fellow student and got to shoot my first Ultra CDP II. Holy cow what a gun! Very nice. I shot a rapid fire 6 round burst at a head target "just following directions" and shot about a 4 inch group from a close 3 yards. The recoil was butter as compared to my Glock 36. Now I can see what all the hype is about.

BTW we shot about 250 rounds today and I did not notice him having any problems with it.

I have noticed with my O frames that oft
en the first rounds and or the last round in a magazine will eject in a different area than the 'body' of the rounds in the magazine.

Most often this is to the rear instead of the side.

I just sent a Glock 26 back because of the same ejector issues. A couple of them actually fell between my glasses and burned my upper & lower eyelids.

I hope to get it back in the next 2 weeks.

I shoot a G-27, same frame as a 26, and have not had ANY malfuctions. My guess is that malfuctions are possible with any guns, but Sigs and Glocks are usually not a problem.
I am curious now, is the problem being fixed by the factory?
If it is the extractor, has anyone ever fed any individual rounds directly into the chamber through the ejection port, not from the magazine?
I am wondering.

An issue I have with the external extractor design is that it is difficult to take one out for inspection. For an auto loader, the extractor is critical to proper operation. If not enough attention is paid to it in cleaning, debris may build up in the hook to prevent proper engagement with the case. This will lead to inconsistent ejections or worst, malfunctions.
