Default P229 Conversions?

Hi everybody. This is my first post here, but I've been reading a lot on calccw and I'd like to send out a blanket thanks to everybody. Lots of good info and y'all seem very friendly and polite. Thx!

On to my question: Can every Sig P229 in either .40 or .357sig be converted to 9mm with a change in barrel? I understand it doesn't work in the opposite direction, but I was under the impression that the former is true. I was about to purchase a P229 on GunBroker (originally chambered for .40) and the seller said it will only convert to .357, not 9mm.

Can anybody out there clarify for me? ::AndyM::

According to another Forum that is dedicated to the Sig pistols it is entirely possible with just the change of a barrel, they recommend the Bar-Sto 9mm "conversion" barrel. Make sure to get the "conversion" barrel and not the "replacement" 9mm barrel. It is supposedly a drop in part, some say that you may need to smoothen some areas in order for it to be a true "drop-in". You may go down in caliber, but not the other way due to the pressure differences involved. Go to the Bar-Sto website for their recommendations. The cost was around $200 to $250 and there apparently is a wait for their barrels. There are other manufacturers that are also supplying similar items but the concensus among the Sig shooters leans towards Bar-Sto. Hope that this helps you.

You can not drop a Sig barrel in, you can drop a Bar-Sto in though.

The problem in going up (.40 or .357 Sig barrel dropped in a 9) is that the 9mm bolt face can't handle the larger diameter cartridge base. I don't know if outer diameter of the larged-caliber barrels is the same as the 9, but it doesn't make any difference.
