I just came from the Fresno gun show and stopped by a gun shop here in town and saw a S&W 4040 PD Compact SC .40 cal and the person said that they will not make this model next year and it won't be valid to be put on a CCW license. If this make and model was tested and approved in California and its in the approved list, why can't the pistol be bought and have it put in a CCW license? (of course you have to qualify on this pistol). Its a pistol that I have been searching for because its a bigger caliber and compact enought to conceal for my small frame (5'3" tall 134 lbs 30" waist) and it feels right in my small hands. As you know I carry a FI Model D .380 cal and know you carry a Colt Mustang .380 cal.

Your cooperation to this matter is greatly appreciated and thanking you in advance, later --- Ray

Actually, it seems that the other half of the FBI powerpoint exonerates Speer 180gr GDHP.

People can carry .380 and smaller guns if they like, at least Ranger makes ammo in .380. But ask yourself if knew you were going to get into a unavoidable gunfight (and could not get a long gun), would you feel comfortable with your ultra-concealable handgun with non-existent sights, short sight radius, small operating controls, low capacity, and sub-caliber while facing two or more armed bad guys?

Default .380 as a carry weapon

I don't have the experience you have in this area, but I do agree with you. I have a Sig P232 that I intend to carry. I feel it will do the job, up to 10m, if I can hit what I am aiming at. I will carry HydraShok ammo, or maybe Winchester Silvertip.

That little pistol is accurate and reliable, and it all boils down to shot placement anyways. My $0.02 worth.

Most corners say "the more holes, the smaller the caliber".

Law Enforcement stop carry silvertip after the FBI shootout in 1987. Winchester replaced them with "Black Talons" (civilian brand) and "Ranger SXT" (LEO brand). Federal has replaced Hydra-Shok with HST.

Yes location is the most important thing. However I want the best bullet in case the location is not perfect.

If I were going to go to a well defined social encounter. I would take with me, something that shoots .45ACP, would be something with a proven reliable feed, if not I will readily fall back on .45ACP ball ammo, I do not have a problem with .45ACP Ball, it has a track record, and it is good, and if you observe the guys shooting the 1911s, they are the ones with the FTFs and other malfunctions, just go to the range and observe, keep mental track of what is going on, so yes .45ACP Ball is my friend because it will go bang every time. An accurized 1911 is avery good thing, meaning you send it out to a guy who works on it, preferably a local that you can go back in case of a problem and get him to tune it, and you shoot the hell out of it til it works everytime. if I can pack between 8 and 10 rounds in each magazine, half dozen mags, then it would be nice to have a shotgun too would be nice. I would do a couple of other things as well.......
The problem is that no one knows if and when.....hopefully 'it' will never happen.
So the heavy iron gets left behind, because it is inconvenient and heavy, and after the newness of carrying wears out, you get tired of the inconvenience, instead now you pack a little "J" frame revolver, Yeah!.... better than nothing......but now you have an inadequate weapon, with inadequate ballistics, minimal round capacity, inpractical for a quick reload, (if you carry a reload, that is). After your five rounds are gone, you pitch it at the bad guys and run like hell........
So what is the solution.....find a middle ground, biggest round in smallest package you can confortably carry, reliable and something you shoot well. If you can't hit the target, you are just making noise. To hit the target you have to train and practice......People generally do not practice enough. Most guns do not get shot after the initial "honeymoon". Let alone taking a class from somebody! Last thing, practice ammo. You use practice ammo, but make sure that you shoot also your defensive ammo as well to insure that it will feed without problems. It is a mechanical thing, check, check, and double check......Lastly, carry method. Go for a comfortable method of carry, if not your long term carry prognosis is not good, if it is heavy and inconvenient, it just won't happen......Ok!...Anything else?
You might ask me, well, Mr. knowitall, what do you carry?

Default .45 ball ammo

I agree, .45 ball ammo "goes bang" just about every time. I have a Sig P220, great gun. Accurate as hell, eats any ammo I have tried so far. But too big & heavy to carry..............so I don't. Also, just 7 rds, as mine is a "Euro Model" and won't take hi-cap (8---10 round) magazines.

I carry a USP-Compact in .40 cal, as a primary. Good gun, lotsa good ammo out there for it. I also concur w/ shooting the "good stuff" at the range. Gotta make sure it'll feed & fire, just like the cheap ball ammo. I usually put thru 1 box of the JHP for every 4--5 boxes of ball ammo.

The new American Rifleman mag has a good write up on the new Ranger Ammo.
