Ok... I like the kimber... If it was between the colt and the kimber or the springfield and the kimber... It would be the kimber.... I am impressed with the lightweight frame and how accurate and concealable it is... I am not a fan of short barrel 45's but this one seems to be very fascinating....I think the fancy ones with checkering and stuff is probably really a good idea... but if price is a factor... get the plain UCII and put at least a night sight on the front sight and be happy... that is what I'm gonna do... replace the front with a tritium front and leave it as it is.. no fancy anything... I've already skinned up the frame a little and the darned thing shoots very well. A govt. model it ain't but I am genuinely suprised. It makes me want to look at the alloy framed govt. models that kimber sells.. maybe the cdp II or that fancy one with the camo laser grip thingee....gee neeto whiz cool stuff...

Then there is les baer and that is where the dreaming seems to stop... and the schemeing begins...

El Gato,

If you're going to look at the CDP II (and you should ) but aren't "a fan of short barrel 45's" you should check out the Compact CDP II which has a 4" barrel, vs. the Ultra CDP II which has a 3" barrel.

Just trying to make the decision making process easier.

Easier....Ha.. I laugh in the face of easier... I eat easier for breakfast... I spit in the eye of easier and knock the chip off of easiers shoulder.... I am the antithesis of easier..... which is of course my main problem...

I kinda like the alloy framed govt models...
I have a custom steel framed commander with an old lightweight slide that I just got back from the gunsmith last week... a little linkage tuneup and the grip safety quit working when I did the frame in OD Green.... I've shot multiple thousands of rounds through the little commander and I still go back to the govt. slide... My FAVORITE carry gun is a 5 in XD for the sake of the inevitable, inestimable, inexorible, ineffiable Pete......
45acp of course is my fav cartridge... unless it is 38 super, 10mm etc...
So it is no wonder that I seek...nay lust after...the govt. slide guns.... however, ever a practical man... I like light weight and am becoming impressed with the alloy framed govt. type guns...
Then I'll go to the shot show and fondle a les baer and it all starts over again...
being fickle minded has it's own rewards however... cause then you eventually... if you persist... get one or two of each!

Got two sig p6's by pouncing when the price was right!

Shot .... "IT" again tonight.. and the commander and the XD and the Kahr P45...
Unfortunately the Kimber has sucked me in...
The commander shoots better as does the XD...
But for a light gun and fast work...the kimber cranks the rounds out...need to get that night sight soon... maybe I'll call kimber and just order the appropriate size front night sight....
AAAARRRRGGGHH.... and the local gun store has one of these Tactical Custom II™ .45 ACP's on the shelf and they allow me to buy at cost plus a ridiculusly small percentage as I do all of their permits free of charge.......The Kimber Vortex is too strong....

Shot it again today with some chip mckormick (sp?) shooting star 8 rounders for my govt. model... I had my first failure to feed... the bullets hit the slide lock and lock open the slide under recoil....
Put in the novak 6 rounder or the factory mag... and it just keeps on chuggin....
The vortex is too strong.......

was that with your Ultra Carry II? (forgive me for asking......this thread's gone on for quite a while & hard to keep it all straight)

I had numerous FTFs with my UCII while breaking it in, then went through a stretch where I couldn't rememeber the last time it didn't fire. Last 3 trips to the range - it's back to it's old tricks...only thing I can count on is the fact that I can hit a dime on the first shot - I sure as heck better hit the BG on the first shot, cuz it might take me a sec to rack the slide for shot #2...

Yes the Ultra..carry it anywhere too....
First jam...
The bullet hit the slide lock forcing it up... happened 4 times in one mag and 3 in another...
Switched to the mags for the gun and blasted away...
I keep a deathgrip on the gun and ride the safety... putting tension between the thumb on the safety and the middle finger under the trigger guard and a strong isocoles (dang internal spell checkers)... stance... shoot standing still moving... one handed no jams as long as I use the novak mags or the factory one...

Thanks Kimmie! I didn't even realize it happened, but the UCII Kool-Aid and putting my hands on the Raptor, well you've no doubt already heard, the Raptor won out. Wish they had a range here at Disneyland!

Hey, El Gato!

If you are "jonesin' for a next one, and it winds up being yet another Kimber, treat it with a little more respect than the last one. Throwing a Kimber in a range bag with magazines and getting your first finish blemish because of it, that's just plain bad form.

Yeah.. I know...
My excuse: I take 8-10 guns with me to the range when I teach classes... I taught a Utah Class and had it out on the table.. class was over about 2245 hrs and tossed everything in a bag as I had to be back out at the range in Kernville at 0800 the next morning for another class... took it outa da bag at the Cal. CCW class and O-CRAP... I scratched the frame... I was tired .... lame excuse isn't it...

Of Course, if this gun turns out to be a hit on the carry front... I could always become astonished at the scratch on the gun my wife wanted and insist I pay pennance by sending it to robar or bear coat and have the frame refinished...It could work!
