Default Any weapon recommendations?

Hi all,
just registered. I have a CCW pending and am trying to decide what to carry. I am a female with a relatively small frame and hand with long thin fingers. I am just learning to shoot and know little about guns. Any recommendations?

Let's see if I can beat everybody else to it.

Kimber Ultra CDPII. 45ACP with a nice single stack mag. Very popular on the board. Male and female alike.

Maybe would not recomend it for a brand new shooter. But since you are getting a CCW, you are going to have to train train train regardless.

Look into some firearms training classes with CCWInstructor at Self Defense Firearms Training - Be Safe, Be Confident, Get Trained! I have taken both my daughter and mom to his classes and you will learn tons!

The ONLY recommendation that makes sense is "What works for you and you're comfortable with."

Try (rent or borrow) as many different guns as you can until you find one that makes you go "WOW I LOVE THIS GUN" and then buy that one.

Good luck and welcome!

Welcome to CalCCW. You'll find that a lot of people here carry the Kimber as mentioned before me. I'd recommend that you find something that fits comfortably in your hand and that you can work the controls fairly easily. Go to Turners (Turner's Outdoorsman) and try some on. Then find a range that has some that you can rent, e.g., Firing Line or Evans.

I'd recommend getting something in at least a .40S&W caliber or higher, like a .45ACP. If those are too powerful for you to comfortably fire, then a 9mm would work too. Look for the compact models or even subcompact models, since they are easier to conceal. I personally like Kimber and H&K, but there are a lot of other good brands out there too - Glock, Springfield Armory, Smith and Wesson, etc. I won't tell you which one to get, since that's like telling you what kind of car you should buy. Try them on, you'll find one you like and that is in your price range. Good Luck with the CCW!

Thanks for the advice. I am taking Greg's training class at Evans. He is so great! I shot the Smith and Wesson 906? 908? 9mm the other night and liked it. I had originally thought of going with the Glock 26 but when I held it, admittedly didn't try shooting it yet, it felt too small. After I had tried out the 9mm and thought that that was what I was going to go with, I was shown the Kimber Ultra CDP 45 and now am confused.

Kimber UC II is a great gun. I have shot dime shooter's UC and its perfect.

I have an Ultra CDP II and you are more than welcome to try it out when you are taking CCWI's class. Just tell him you want to try my CDP and he will find me.

As AMS mentioned if you are in CCWI's class next Wed at Evans ask him to run us down. There will be more than one CDP there. Plus a few other CCW handguns you might have a chance to try out.

That's not his picture. It belongs to Ken Lunde, who does take great pictures, and has an impressive collection of firearms. He posts on SigForum pretty often, and you can find a link to his photo gallery which is well organized and has lots of pics of various pistols.
