I borrowed a
Kimber CDP II Ultra (3" .45ACP) this past weekend from CCWI while going through his BH and BH2 classes. I had my Wife shoot my stainless Colt series 80 government 5" 1911 in the same class. We put 450 rounds through each of the guns, and traded off in the last three strings just to get clarity on the differences.
Wow, the CDP II Ultra shot fantastic in the close-combat ranges I used it. It felt solid, controllable, and was easy to line-up and point in the various drills we did. All the controls were positive in actuation and easy to reach.
When I traded off with my Wife for the full-size stainless gun, the change in mass didn't make as large as a change in perceived recoil as I thought it might. The full size stainless gun felt a little softer (mass in the firearm plus wrap-round Hogue rubber finger grips were responsible for this) but not proportionally so. To be honset neither of us felt the change in perceived recoil was very noticeable between the two guns. We were shooting 230gr FMJ WWB ammo exclusively .
The checkering on the CDP II front and backstraps gave a very positive grip, but at the end of the day the flesh of my shooting plam was a little agitated / roughed up from the 450 impacts it recieved. It is clearly something that a little more time would allow the skin to toughen up and become resistant to.
I'm pretty sure CCWI had me shooting a Wilson mag in the Kimber, but aside from that modification I believe it was stock. It never choked, hiccuped, or even thought twice about doing it's job over and over again.
Damn CCWI and the CDPII, my checkbook is in serious trouble!!
