Default Status of M&P Shield?

Anyone know the status on whether or not the M&P shield will be ca legal for civilians? If so, what is the ETA?

Since it does not have all the features required by California's "safe gun" law, I don't think it will make the roster. Specifically, it does not have a magazine disconnect, and will fire with the magazine removed. I don't think Springfield's XDS is going to make it either, for the same reason we don't get the XDm--no external manual safety. (XDs are grandfathered as they were rostered before that requirement was enacted.)

S&W stated in their press release that a CA Version was in the works and it looks like it will be on the roster later this Summer:

As long as the M&P Shield has all of the requirements that California lays out for the "not unsafe" roster, it will make the roster. If it does not have all of those requirements, it will not. If a California version is in the works, that would definitely be nice for people that want to buy one.

S&W says there is a CA approved list version in the works for a "summer" release time frame.

If S&W has a CA version of the shield in the works, does anyone know if they will have a CA version of the bodyguard .380?

Given how ling its been out,I think it doubtfu that the bodyguard will be released for the California market. And I am still waiting on the Sig P238, which rumor had it is supposed to be in production now, but whose registration with the DOJ expires at the end of July.

The Shield is on the roster, effective July 3, 2012. Whether or not there are any guns available is a separate question I cannot answer. CA SKU is 187021 (standard non-CA model SKU is 180021)

On another note, have yet to see a Sig P238-TSS-CA, and it falls of the list 7/21 unless renewed. Hmmm.

It takes about a month for S&W to list the CA approved version on their website.

It takes about 2-3 months for S&W to ship the CA approved versions to distributors.

So, it will be about 2-4 months before the CA approved version shows up at your LGS. YMMV.

I was in a local gun store a few weeks ago and the guy next to me picked up an M&P Shield with a single shot exemption. So, at least one gun was available.

BTW, he let me handle it, I was impressed with its compactness.

Just be very careful about the SSE thing. The dealer must be an 07 FFL (manufacturing) and not just an 01 FFL to do the conversion. Changing a Semi-auto to a Single Shot changes the action of the gun, as in it changes the way it works, therefore, an 07 FFL must do the conversion. It's not like the Bullet Button for rifles as that only fixes the magazine and doesn't change the operation of the action, because as long as there's ammo in the magazine, the gun will still fire and load the next round each time you pull the trigger. SSE's don't because it fires, opens the breech and YOU must reload the gun yourself.

If the Shield 9 is on the roster, I would imagine that a .40 S&W version wouldn't be too far behind.
