Default Cheaper Than Dirt Rip-Off

I almost placed an order with Cheaper Than Dirt when I noticed they were going to charge a "Package Protection" fee of $2.99 on top of their regular shipping charge. I believe this is a rip-off because their regular shipper, FedEx, already provides some basic insurance as part of the shipping service. The package protection fee goes directly to Cheaper Than Dirt. Their website states that for the package protection fee, they will gladly fix any problems regarding the shipment. As far as I am concerned, that is their obligation and should not charge an extra fee to do it.

I am boycotting Cheaper Than Dirt until they rescind this fee. I request that all CalCCW members call Cheaper Than Dirt at 1-800-421-8047 to complain about this unnecessary package protection fee.

Don't forget, with the looming threat of the online ammo ban, Cheaper Than Dirt was the first company I'm aware of to stop shipping to California, preceeding the ban by a couple months.

I, too, am done with them.

On top of that, during the ammo shortage that followed the Nov '08 elections, CDT was one of the worst price gougers on ammunition. As a rabid capitalist myself, I understand and appreciate the laws of supply and demand. But they went too far, IMO and I have had them on my personal black list ever since.

I have stopped using Cheaper Than Dirt for last 6 years, when I found out they are an anti-CA vendor.
They won't ship things that they think are illegal in CA, but are legal in CA, and they have a poor atittude to CA residents ("you should move out of CA if you want our stuff").
Unless they change ownerhip/management, they are unwilling to change any of their policies.

Well that's fine but with all that said, when I search for and buy ammo for a price point, CTD wins 3 out of 4 times including all their extra charges.

Its my money and I'll go where I save the most, and the heck with the rest of the BS!

Really? Just off the top of my head I can think of about four different websites that offer ammunition for a lot less than CTD. Some of them even ship for free.

Ammunition, Magazines, Rifle Parts, Bulk Ammo and Rifle Accessories – Palmetto State Armory

https://theammobroker.com/9mm-ammo-c-26_30.html

AMMOMAN.COM

Ammo-Pistol - Surplus Ammo

For instance, I typically use Speer 9mm 115gr Lawman for practice. CTD sells a box for $14.29 while TheAmmoBroker sells it for $11.89 a box. Yeah, I stopped using CTD a long time ago.

I use AMMOENGINE to get my prices and have not ever seen those sites before. I being an extreme CheapSkate will look at these sites and give them a shot.

I would love to see a thread started on best AMMO prices that we could all share. I shoot 40's and 45's which always seem to come at a premium.

Yes. $600/1000 Wolf 7.62x39. I won't forget that.

I just spoke with a supervisor at Cheaper Than Dirt regarding the package protection fee. I was told that CTD would handle any problems with FedEx if the box were lost in exchange for the package protection fee. I said that the fee was unncessary and unjustified. I requested that the fee not be charged. The supervisor said that there was no way to opt out of the fee. I said that I would not be ordering from CTD while the fee was mandatory.

I looked at the other websites mentioned in this thread and found one that was selling what I wanted for LESS than CTD.

Did you save enough for your time and aggravation? I price my time at a Buck-Fifty a minute, and aggravation on a sliding scale from there, how about you?

While I too consider my time to be valuable I do not do buisness with cheats.

If I am not satisfied with how a company treats their customers then I simply go elsewhere.

CTD was at one time when they first opened but over the years their prices seem to be less competative so I have not ordered from them in some time. This news has confirmed to me that they are not a company I want to deal with.
