Default Steyr magazine question...

I know some of you have Steyr pistols so you might know this..

I need some new magazines for my M40-A1, but I can only seem to find M40 magazines - do they interchange freely? Anyone know a good source for said magazines?

Thanks...

Update for posterity: The guys at Steyr Club answered this one - yes they are the same magazine.

Interesting pistol. I don't have one but they seem quality and they have a NAME to them. Thanks for the post. Guess its research and borrowing time. When you handle it, does it have a some weight to it? That was the one thing about the Sig Pro .40 that I felt uncomfortable about. It felt like a toy and so I just guessed that felt recoil would be proportional.

It's about the same weight and heft as a full-size Glock, but with substantially less felt recoil and a much better trigger. It kicks less than my full-size USP .40, which seemed unlikely to me.

The wacky trapezoid sights took some getting used to, but I really like them now, they're very quick to pick up compared to 3-dots, at least for me.

The more I shoot it, the more I like it. You're welcome to try mine out at a range sometime if you're in the area.

The Steyr is a very interesting gun to shoot. The sights are suprisingly fast once you get to know them. The recoil is interesting. If you don't like the way a glock points though you'll likely be disapointed in the feel. Personally I am very interested, not enough to bump the Les Baer off of the top of my list mind you, but interested.

Steyrs suffered from extractor problems when they first came out. Have they corrected the problem?
By the way H&K USPs have had an inordinate number of problems with their firing pins shattering. I hear through the grapevine the company is doing firing pin swaps as a preventive measure on existing handguns.

My buddy shoots alot of 40 through his and broke the disconnector. I had to loan him a glock to finish his qualification on his last ccw. Haven't heard of any trouble otherwise. Is I was going to seriously look to carry one, I would do what I have done with my glock 22's...one to carry and one to shoot the crap out of. I have of course shot several thousand rounds out of the carry gun and do shoot it regularly. But for the hard use, I have a range gun that matches the carry gun. Clint Smith says it best... two is one...one is none (even good guns can break)

Steyr redesigned the extractor a while ago. Mine hasn't given me any problems.

Good, I know Steyr has a cult like following. I have never even seen one for real at a range. They just came out with a compact, an S designation. Please keep us informed. I'd like to see variety and choices out there. Just keeps things more interesting! Variety...spice of life!

The firing pin problem is an old one, due to a bad batch. I haven't heard of an instance of one breaking on a USP newer than AA date code ('01 and up) in many years. I've owned USP's since 2001 (6 so far, 3 currently) and never had a problem despite many thousands of rounds downrange. You can learn more about it on the HKPRO forums.

It happens to the best of them. HK had their firing pins, Kimber had the debacle that was external extractors, Beretta had cracking locking blocks, there are numerous reports on the S&W forums about the internal locks locking themselves on newer j-frames, Sig has the insanely problematic GSR, Glock did an unofficial recall on a series of serial numbers, plus the Glock 36 has always had a reputation for being "iffy". Hell, even Ed Brown had the "peeling stainless steel" beavertails on Kobra Carry models, and Wilson Combat's KZ-45 has been a FTF nightmare for many people (myself included, Wilson bought it back from me). The Intarweb always makes these out to be epidemic in proporation, but generally the problems are much more isolated than gun forums might suggest.

At least some companies deal with the problems. Kimber has replaced countless slide assemblies with internal extractor models, HK replaces firing pins (although dealing with them has been less than wonderful for many people), Glock never called it a "recall" but fixed their guns.... more than can be said for other companies (*cough* SIG)

I have to admit that I'm concerned about this S&W internal lock problem. If you check out the smith and wesson forums (sister site to SigForum), there are many people reporting this problem.

Next time we're going to a range remind me to bring my 9mm one.
