Default Kimber Question

What's the difference between this gun Kimber - Continuing The Legacy

and the CDP that most of you guys carry. Even after reading the website it's hard for me to tell the difference.

Ultra CDP VS Ultra Carry
Stainless Steel Slide vs mat black oxide steel
Rosewood Grips vs black synthetic
Premium aluminum match grade trigger vs aluminum match grade trigger
ambidextrous safety vs left side safety
carry melt of frame and slide vs not

I think that is it. Anyone else know?

Three differences off hand are the SS slide, the melt treatment and the rosewood grips on the Ultra CDP.

The CDP is Custom Defense Package. It is a fitted gun that everything rounded, or melded. It also has checkering, ambi safety, rosewood grips and a match trigger.

Well worth the price differnce.

Is there a checkering difference? I must have missed that.

You won't go wrong with any Kimber gun, so if you are on a tight budget, the plain jane version will be quite serviceable for you. For the extra money however, you get some real nice features and improvements.

Default UC vs CDP

Frontstrap checkering is the biggest difference for me. CDP comes with it, UC does not. I didn't really care about the ambi-safety or melt when I bought my UCII.

I talked to Kimber's custom shop about adding checkering and it was 4 weeks and ~$300. It would have been cheaper to just buy the CDP. Hygyliac suggested well placed skateboard tape which does work well.

I absolutely love my UCII and believe you can't go wrong with either choice...depending on your requirements.

I'm hoping that if I help "A Guy" sell enough CDPs I'll get a free one...

Seriously though, I've let at least 3 or 4 people try out my Ultra Carry II and they immediately ordered CDPs.

-Peter

ps. I'm putting that $300 towards my next purchase which will most likely be a 4" or 5" TLE/RL (which includes the frontstrapping) or similar length CDP.

I bought one from "I Know A Guy" a few months ago and am very happy with it. Get one from "The Guy" and never look back....

I checked out an Ultra CDP II couple days ago, and I was pretty impressed with the fit and finish. I also checked out the Commander-sized one, and while it was nice also, I compared it to a Glock 19, and it was bigger in both overall length and height. If I ever got one, I'd probably get a Bobtail installed. I definitely want one of each, but unfortunately it's going to be awhile so the Glock 30 stays on my permit for now

I don't like ambi safeties, but that's an easy fix. The checkering is nice, and the melt job is sweet. I'll probably get one when I have the spare cash, and send it to Ted Yost or Dave Williams for some small changes, keeping the Glock 30 on my permit until I get it back.

I have also considered pulling the Glock 19 off the permit and getting the Scandium-framed j-frame (the 12 ounce one) to carry with .38 +p loads. For me, small and comfortable means I'm going to carry more often, and that's the most important part. I find myself carrying the Glock 26 most of the time, although when it gets a bit cooler I'll wear a jacket and carry the other two guns more often.

The UCDP II is a real sweet compact. Even with my big hands it shoots easily.

BTW, I was considering real recently buying the RCP II, but found out it is not on the CA DOJ approved list, unless someone knows something I don't know.
