During the 90s, the FBI settled on the Hydra-shock hollowpoints as their duty ammo. I figured if the FBI says it's good to go for their agents, then it's good enough for me.

I still have a large supply of 230gr hydra-shocks. When I finally burn through it, next 2-3 years, I'm probably going to pick up the Federal HST or Winchester Ranger SXT.

OK.....
I am going to introduce a little homemade napalm....I am bored!
Why go with a 230 grain bullet, why not go with a lighter bullet?
You should be able to develop more velocity with a lighter bullet, in a caliber that is already slow, staying subsonic is not an issue, I mean we are not dealing with a suppressed operation, so it doesn't matter.
Yeah, yeah....inertia in a heavier bullet...blah, blah...We agreed we are going to go with FMJ-Ball for a .45ACP.......SHOW ME!.....I am from the "Show Me" state.
Let's get a argument going.....There has got to be a trade off. How about distance...not a big deal, we are shooting in CQB...no wind drift, bullet drop..... any of that. What is the drop on the GAP round, faster powder....more snap....is there a control issue ? does it make sense?
Over to you good buddy.......

More mass generally equates to a harder hit, but in the case of 185 vs 230, I'd think the advantage is larger bullet weight = larger wound channel. Bigger hole. Greater leakage.

Winchester Ranger SXT. Like everyone said above. I am finishing up some old CorBon (flying ashtrays).
Just as in the ski industry where new technology has changed things so dramatically, the ammo industry is full of new technology.

I'm no expert but I can google like a mofo.

Shooting The Messenger: Federal HST versus Ranger-T

Win. Ranger/Federal HST vs phonebooks - 1911Forum

Notice that the pics are the same and one site is claiming they were shot through gelatin when it appears they were it actually shot through phonebooks. Hmmm.

From the research I have done. "using the same methods as you" There is nothing wrong with Federal HST. Seem to be a solid performer. Getting a hold of them is a different story though. Especially in 45ACP.

I know a "guy" you can get Ranger T from any day of the week and twice on Sundays!

I'll have to find out if I'm allowed to use either of those.

I really like the Winchester 230 grain as well. I also use Magtech for target practice. I am shooting a Springfield 1911 A and have never had any jams or misfires. Magtech is a little messy, but you gotta clean'em anyway.

Is there a reason why you wouldn't be able to use them? I carry Ranger T in both the semi autos on my OC CCW.

Your Department issue's the "T" series. You know it as SXT. Tripod and Marc issue it.

I'm a Reserve for a PD. We have to use weapons and ammo that is approved. Most everything is so it's not a big deal.

I also was issued a CCW but out of LA County.
