Default Best SD Ammo for 10mm

Hello All,

I am going to be using a full size 10mm as a daily carry. Given the following ballistics, which round would be best for daily carry? Is over penetration an issue?

DoubleTap 10mm
135gr JHP @ 1600fps - 11.0" / .70" frag nasty
155gr Gold Dot JHP @ 1475fps - 13.5" / .88"
165gr Gold Dot JHP @ 1400fps - 14.25" / 1.02"
165gr Golden Saber JHP @ 1425fps - 14.75" / .82"
180gr Golden Saber JHP @ 1330fps - 16.0" / .85"
180gr XTP @ 1350fps – 17.25” / .77”
180gr Gold Dot JHP @ 1300fps - 15.25" / .96"
200gr XTP @ 1250fps - 19.5" / .72"
230gr Equalizer @ 1040fps - 11.0" and 17.0" / .62" and .40"

As always, thanks for your input

Bob

Bob,

The slower moving, heaver weighted bullets have less chance of over penetration. They also bounce around more inside. The 230's look very good.

Greg,

Thanks for the reply. The 230 grain Equalizer is actually a round that I have never heard of before (two projectiles). It is described as:

"Penetration. Expansion. Damage. Power. Controllable.
These are words used to describe the new 230gr. Equalizer from DoubleTap.

What about two shots in one?
A 135gr. JHP over a 95gr. lead ball @ 1040fps. This load is VERY accurate and
produces two holes on target. The ball hits high every time - less than one inch
from the JHP @ 10yds and 2.5" from the JHP @ 25yds

Caliber : 10mm

Bullet : 230gr. two projectiles: 135gr. JHP and 95gr. lead ball

Ballistics : 1040fps/ 553 ft./lbs. - Glock 20"

The Equalizer is an interesting idea but given this additional information would you still recommend it or would you go with the 200 grain XTP since it is the next largest? The XTP penetrates to 19.5" and expands to .72".

But then the 165gr Gold Dot JHP @ 1400fps penetrates to 14.25" and expands 1.02". A 1.02" wound channel at 14.25"? Ouch!

Thanks again for everything you do.

Bob,

I wasn't aware it was two rounds. Pass on it then. You need to account for both projectiles.

Go with the 200gr XTP @ 1250fps - 19.5" / .72"

Thank you for your kind words.

Hi Bob,

I carried and used a S&W 1006 for many years, both on and off the job and until recently had it on my CCW. The 10MM Auto cartridge is a confidence inspiring cartridge. I believe it is an excellent SD round for anyone who is not recoil sensitive and does not mind the weight of full sized 10MM platforms.

Over penetration is an issue that should always be considered with any cartridge and this particularly true of the 10 MM Auto. I personally witnessed a Norma 200 Grain FMJ Truncated Cone bullet pass through both doors of one vehicle and the drivers side door of an adjacent vehicle many years ago. The windows on the first vehicle were down and the window of the second vehicle was up.

I have carried 180 Grain XTP bullets loaded to 1250 - 1300 FPS predominantly and have always felt well protected.

I can comfortably recommend any of the 180 or 200 grain loads you noted above. I think any would serve you well.

Thanks,

I love the cor-bon 135's in the 40 sw. Shot deer with the 180's and was not a happy camper...shot deer (short range) with the 40 sw 135 gr. and he looked like he had been shot with a high power rifle.... 70 caliber and broke the shoulder. The stuff goes 70 caliber consistently in jello and penetrates about 11 inches... for what that's worth.... the 10mm corbon is about 100fps faster than the 40...

I do not like overpenetration in condensed urban environments and the 135s do not seem to overpenetrate.

Mas Ayoob wrote (paraphrased) - you might be justified in shooting the bad guy and then have a whole lot of trouble explaining why you also hit the little old lady 3 blocks down the street....

Having said that, slow fat bullets don't seem to overpenetrate either.....

By the way... love my 10!

I have a Glock 20 10mm... For home self defense, I use Federal Hydra-shok, which have the "FBI load", which basically reduces it to a .40, which I assume is fine for self defense and avoid over penetration.
If I want something to carry as emergency side arm in Alaska, or if I want people next to me at the shooting range to wonder, "what is he shooting?", then I have some beefy Buffalo Bore rounds. :-)

Gentlemen:

My friend Clint H., who runds Starts and Stripes Ammo in Florida, is making up some 10mm for me, and I would highly recommend him. I have used his loads for hunting rifles up to 500 A-Square caliber, and he has consistently high quality. Clint's contact info as follows: 8340 Ulmerton Road, Suite 206, Largo, FL 33771 (727) 530-1129, StarsStripesAmmo@Hotmail.com, Stars and Stripes Custom Ammunition.

I extracted this from an recent email from him on the subject of 10mm:

"10mm is currently running $29.99/box of 50 on the 200gr Hornady HAP(FMJ), and $34.99/box of 50 on the 200gr XTP. These loadings are made to CIP specs, so they duplicate the original Norma loadings that really had some zip. Recent US loadings have been quite anemic, and I cannot figure why, it isn't like 10mm is turning up in crapped out pistols, unless US manufacturers are worried it will sreal the thunder from the 40 S&W market which has absolutely taken off."

"Pricing will probably change soon on 10mm being I'm getting low on brass and with the way the market is right now there have been drastic changes on component costs every other month, and now lead prices are going stupid. Remington and Starline announced 30% price increases for early '08, so hopefully they'll hold prices on existing invetory and not jack it for the hell of it."

Tell him Bill Prentice sent you, and I might get a break on my next order!

Bill
