Default Not to sound stupid, but what is a "O" Frame?

OK, I have been reading this "O" Frame thing in many places, plus I guess one of my carry, Kimber CDP II is also "O" Frame. The question is, what are the difference with the rest of the 1911 platform? What should I look for when I strip my Colt Gold Cup and my 2011 Kimber. Or are they all "O" Frame?

I don't care WHO ya are -that's funny right there.

Actually, it was a model designation given back long ago by Colt to the 1911 (actually I think it was earlier than the 1911) and it's platform. (IIRC - my mind is a bit toasted right now, long couple of days)...

It was described to me as the frame designation. I believe by S&W.

O-Frame was a designation set by Colt on some of their pistols. I have no idea of the history behind it or why though. Also, PM sent.

Per 'A Guy' I know I was asked to post proof positive of the 'O-Frame' designation for all to marvel at.

Exhibit #1: The Source

Exhibit #2: Alphabet Soup Hartford, CT style

Exhibit #3: The O-Frame umbrella circa 1986.Funny, 1911 isn't in the list!

It's still only what Colt calls it. Everybody else in the world calls it a 1911 pattern. Just like D Frame, I frame, etc.
If it's not a Colt it is not a O frame for me. Just like a Taurus 5 shot is not a J-frame either.
Now watch the flamethrower....

We get these kinds of things all the time:
  • Kleenex is a brand, not a tissue
  • Xerox is a company not a copy
  • Porsche stopped making the '911' sports car in 1989
  • Colt hasn't produced a 1911 since long before I was born

Go to MidwayUSA, Natchez, Brownells, Cabelas, etc. and try to give them money for O-frame trinkets (you can't). However they are happy to sell you anything you want for your 1911.

Regardless of what it's called it's what I shoot & carry.

To the best of my knowledge, I'm the only one on this forum with a 1911. It's a A1 made in the 20's.
