Default Affordable CCW?

I was wondering if there are any affordable CCW's out there for CA. I've been looking at the hi-point 9mm, I hear good things, and bad things about it (its probably one of the cheapest new pistols you can find) also I've heard it is quite large. Any suggestions? I'm looking for something up to $300 new or used. I know, I know, according to some people, $300 is too cheap to trust your life to but, IMO, anything is better than nothing.

Thanks

I wouldn't do the HiPoint thing, personally. Those things creep me out. Maybe you can find a used Taurus on Gunbroker ...like this one.

+1

You get what you pay for. Really. I tried out the hiPoint. It's interesting but personally I would not bet my life on it after checking them out.

Ruger is a most excellent gun as well in the affordable realm in both revolver and auto. I own two and they are both 100% reliable and have never failed me.

What's your life worth? What was true in 1968 is true today. A reliable pistol should cost about 2 months salary for a 1911, and about 2 weeks worth for a Glock.

Great. That means I can buy a handgun for free.

Excellent way to phrase it.

Default idea?

I enjoyed fondling a Kahr CW9 yesterday. A good gun at a good price...

There are lots of reliable small pistols and revolvers out there but HiPoint, Rossi, Bersa and Phoenix Arms are not among them.
Try to find a used Glock, Ruger, S&W, Beretta, Auto-Ordinance, Colt or maybe even a new Charter Arms or Taurus. Many of these are in the $300-$400 range.

LMFAO!

sorry, i must disagree!

i make a good wage, and TWO MONTHs of my pay for a good 1911?
I doubt there is a 1911 made for carrying that meets that amount (museum piece, ok). that is just rediculous.

to the O.P., you CAN find a good used ruger p89 for your 300 i am sure, and it is a great shooting, reliable weapon.
Buy the highpoint for when you have money to burn, and and well insured for limb loss

You must not be making much....... a reliable 1911 will run you way less then that.... heck I got one that I paid less then $500 for and I"d trust it ANYDAY of the week... heck I put one time through it over 1000 rounds without cleaning and it didn't hiccup once.

I've found the Hi-Point C9 to be reliable and accurate, YMMV. But it's big and bulky. OTOH, the price is nice, and it's better than a stick.

Wow you need to look for a better paying job.

A new Glock is just over $500 and a Colt 1911 is about $800-$900.

I think most of us could buy quite a few 1911's with 2 months salary.

$300 can get you a good handgun, but you need another couple hundred for ammo, for training so you aren't a danger to yourself and the rest of us, a holster so you don't stripe your butt, and a safe.

There are many pistols that are not expensive which are reliable. Matter of fact, at the risk of suffering from "rectocranial inversion" I will state that I believe today, there are guns out there that you will pay high dollars and will not be reliable.
Reliability is the number one issue, then if it is not as accurate, that is OK. In our case, portability is an issue, that translate into ability to CCW, legally of course.
How about a CZ, or a Browning High Power, EAA, one of the best CZ clones,, if you can find a used one. Many used revolvers, although, for me, a revolver is not an answer.
I have given you some of the classics. Even an old, GI .45ACP 1911 or "O" frame, whatever you want to call it. Then they were made right. If high end you have Sig and H&K, high bucks. But good high bucks.
Glocks are middle of the road price wise. Are they reliable? Yes.
Strip yourself of the dogma you are going to get from some and use what works for you. Dig around! Be heartless, if it does not work get rid of it, no matter how pretty. Find what works.
You can go higher up but cost will kill the deal for a low cost gun...
