Default 1911 Gunsmith

Does anyone have a good gunsmith they would trust their gun to?
I live in LaQuinta, have a 1911 Wilson CQB, had the top end refinished and the darn thing will not run for anything.. Thanks.

Welcome to the Site,

one of the other members who lives in Riverside County may chime in (Keith92555)

There is a outstanding gunsmith here that I use, however distance maybe an issue (about 3 hours north on 395)

I am curious as to what was replaced and what issues you are having

Spend the money in shipping to send it off to the more well known smiths like John Harrison. You will have it perfect the first time and not risk spending more money fixing a bad smith job.

I had my Les Baer worked up just for fun by him and it came back amazing. I have yet to hear negative things about the man and he is very easy to communicate with.

+1. Get it done right the first time. Send it to someone who knows what they are doing or send it back to the factory. Have you tried it with different loads? JHPs vs HPs? Who did the top end? Could they fix their error?

I think it sounds as if whom ever did the refinish already botched it up so this time do it right. Dont go hunting down wannabe local 1911 smiths or I foresee more money wasted. Perhaps too thick a finish was used or depending on the type of finish too high a temp when applying it was used. I sure hope all the parts arent ruined from high temps.

When Harrison did my Les Baer I got a new finish but he then refits all the parts and test fires etc before I get it back. No way would you get a gun back from him that didnt run. I will say the only issue I had was he forgot to loctite the rear sight screw so it slid out, lol. He spent some time on the phone with me and it was as simple as rubbing some loctite in the dovetail and on the screw and done. He did offer to return to him if I wasnt comfortable doing it which was very cool.

Either way Harrison can fix the gun and redo what ever was done to it correctly. You might as well just save a few bucks more and get some goodies done to it all in the same trip. I spent another $1k on my baer after purchasing it and didnt do anything fancy so it adds up real quick.

Since you are in La Quinta, run out to the Palm Springs gun club,

November 2009,

on any match day, and ask the match director to inspect your 1911. They can quickly tell you what happened to your gun, and most likely fix it right there on the spot. It's not like guys who shoot 1911's in competition don't carry spare parts...

several of the locals who have been carrying 1911's since the 60's use John... the work I have seen from him is outstanding...

If Danforth has a good reputation then go for it. All I know is nobody talks about these guys on the 1911 forums and there are only a small number of very well know smiths out there and that aint local to us.

Well, if you want the best of the best of the best, then only Bill Laughridge will do. Course you may have to wait 2 years...

Yeah some of those guys are amazing but the wait isnt for everyone. I know Harrison and some of the other guys that are well known on the 1911 forums turn around pretty quickly. I think I waited about 2-3 months for the work on mine and most of that was 8 weeks from the IonBond finishers.

Go here and ask around or research then you can decide for yourself whom is best for you.

Daves Metal Works in Covina has built my guns for some years now.

Reasonable rates, great work, good turn around.

He's doing a Commander now and I'm sending him a couple of STI frames to be built.

Didn't mean to leave Dave Laver out, it's just that I associate Benelli's with Dave (626-859-0299). Also JoJo Vidanes at Norco Running Gun, JVDynamics.com - Custom Guns 951.846.9550

I can understand that he built my Benelli into a much better shotgun.
