I love gun on a rope. Mine has the Hoppe's No. 9 scent.
![]() InkedDad, I have one sidearm. It's my CCW and my house gun. When not carrying, it's out of the holster with a full mag, and one in the pipe. It's always out of sight, but within reach. I have no kids in the house. |

Since I originally asked this question before I had a CCW, I now have my own routine. I have two small children in the house, a 22 month old and 3 year old. So obviously securing my weapons are of the utmost importance. I have two safes, a large gun safe where I secure my long guns, ammo, etc. And a smaller hidden safe which I mounted up in the wall in my bedroom.
My routine: As soon as I get home from work I head to the bedroom, close the door and offload my handgun (condition 1) out of my holster into my wall safe. I do this with the door closed because I don't want my kids even knowing it's there, and I don't want them to see me entering the code either. I then off load my holster (MTAC), keys, wallet, cellphone, grenades, etc. on my nightstand... rinse, repeat.

Just saw this thread so I guess I'll chime in now. I keep my carry weapons in the safe, loaded, at night. I have this ritual where I put the carry gun away and then grab the Remington 870, 8 shot. I place it under the bed next to me, lock the safe, and go to sleep. In the morning the first thing I do(after a quick stop by the bathroom) is to open said gun safe..retreive the carry weapons for the day, and put the shot gun up until I take it out again that night.

No little ones running around, so this makes it easy.
My HK40c carry stays in the holster attached to my jeans/pants right at the foot of the bed. My full size HK USP.45 was my "Night Watchman" with light and laser. It comes out of my "Clock Safe" and sits on the dresser at night and goes back into the safe when I leave for work. I just picked up my Remington 870 and will be adding the light soon. This will be my new "Night Watchman" for bumps in the night. I leave my carry gun in the holster attached to my jeans in case I need to get dressed fast. My wife was beginning to think that I was a "little over the top" until 2 weeks ago she was the one who heard the bump in the night and at the same time the blinds rattled. Normally I hear something and jump up on full alert and she's telling me I need to stop reading all those books and calm down a little. This time I was sound asleep and she's the one who was freaking out. ![]() It turned out to be a few deer bumping against the house with their antlers hitting the siding. The wind was blowing the blinds a little as the window was cracked open for some cool air. This time it was nothing, but her fear was real. A few years ago we had an event with a fugitive loose who was shooting at random cars and the police once they caught up with him. We heard the gun shots and the report of him loose in the area behind our house. At this time I just had the HK45 but it felt good to at least have that. This event lasted 30 or more minutes so all I had to do was to cover the sliding glass door to our bedroom. The “other” weapons are in the gun safe.
