Heads up for S&W M&P owners.

Quote:
SHERIFFS DEPARTMENT BROADCAST ANNOUNCEMENT

TRAINING BUREAU WEAPONS TRAINING

TO: ALL SWORN PERSONNEL

SUBJECT: OFFICER SAFETY ALERT - SMITH & WESSON M&P PISTOLS

RECENT DEVELOPMENTS HAVE FORCED A DEPARTMENTAL RE-EVALUATION OF THE SMITH & WESSON 9MM M&P SEMI-AUTOMATIC PISTOL AS AN AUTHORIZED OPTIONAL HANDGUN FOR SWORN PERSONNEL.

EFFECTIVE IMMEDIATELY, THE SMITH & WESSON 9MM M&P FULL SIZE PISTOL IS NO LONGER AN AUTHORIZED OPTIONAL ON-DUTY PISTOL.

EFFECTIVE IMMEDIATELY, THE SMITH & WESSON 9MM M&P COMPACT PISTOL IS NO LONGER AN AUTHORIZED OPTIONAL OFF-DUTY PISTOL.

SINCE FIRST APPROVAL AS AN OPTIONAL PISTOL ON DECEMBER 10, 2008, THE FULL-SIZED AND/OR COMPACT VERSIONS OF THE 9MM SMITH & WESSON M&P PISTOL HAVE BEEN DEPLOYED BY 49 SWORN PERSONNEL ON AND OFF DUTY. ONE OF THESE PISTOLS WAS DELIVERED NEW WITH AN IMPROPERLY MACHINED BARREL THAT WOULD NOT EJECT SPENT CARTRIDGE CASINGS. ANOTHER OF THESE PISTOLS EXPERIENCED A BARREL FAILURE IN MID-APRIL OF THIS YEAR. AFTER FIRING LESS THAN 10,000 ROUNDS OF TRAINING AMMUNITION. THIS PISTOL BARREL BROKE INTO TWO PIECES JUST AHEAD OF THE FIRING CHAMBER.

ADDITIONALLY, A SIGNIFICANT NUMBER OF DEPUTY ACADEMY CLASS #377 RECRUITS WITH ISSUED NEW SMITH & WESSON 9MM M&P FULL-SIZE PISTOLS HAVE EXPERIENCED PHASE-2 PISTOL MALFUNCTIONS, CAUSED BY SPENT CASINGS FAILING TO EXTRACT FROM BARREL CHAMBERS, DURING THE PAST TWO WEEKS OF TRAINING. CLASS #377 RECRUITS WILL BE ISSUED BERETTA 92FS PISTOLS ON WEDNESDAY APRIL 29, 2009, AND THEIR M&P PISTOLS REMOVED FROM SERVICE.

PERSONNEL SAFETY AND RELIABLE EQUIPMENT REMAIN OUR PRIMARY CONCERNS.

DIRECT ANY QUESTIONS TO LIEUTENANT MICHAEL C. REYNOLDS MCREYNOL@LASD.ORG OR SERGEANT DAVID NELL DANELL@LASD.ORG AT THE B.C. RANGE.

LEROY D. BACA, SHERIFF KBL/SNDG

As an owner of both glock and kimber, I would never carry the kimber, it's just not very reliable, the glock just keeps on ticking like the energizer bunny.

Kimber is a lot nicer to shoot and a more accurate, but not as reliable.

I do not want to start any kind of war here, but in my own experience, as I also own both, I have to strongly agree with the quoted statement.
I ain't taking no chances!!
I know, double negative, but I mean that! Sorry!

How does a thread about S&W M&Ps turn into a Glocks rule Kimbers s*ck thread?

You know it is going SUL when the post starts with

Last I heard the best trained unit of the LAPD is very happy with their Kimbers.

Besides the LASO did not buy a Glock to replace their M&Ps they bought a Beretta.

Kimbers are cool, but I wouldn't carry one full time either. Glock is the ultimate carry pistol.

For the record, I've never had a problem with any of my Glocks.

LASD have issued Model 92s for a very long time. They just switched back to them because they work and they probably still have a bunch on hand.
I don't know if Glocks are approved on LASD but if they aren't they should be. They're not as pretty as Kimbers but they work.

And Detroit adopts the M&P40.

Shooting Wire
Quote:
The Department has placed an order for 5,000 Smith & Wesson M&P40 polymer pistols, chambered in .40 S&W. The pistols will be issued to each officer of the Detroit Police Department and will replace currently issued, non-Smith & Wesson firearms supplied by a European-based manufacturer. During the selection process for a new duty sidearm, the M&P pistol was compared exclusively with the department's then-current handgun. The M&P40 received high marks on officer evaluation forms for the pistol's ergonomics, operating controls and reliability. The M&P pistol was also noted for its ambidextrous controls and the ability to customize the grip size of the pistol to each officer's preference.

Did I mention American made!!!!!Just like Kimber!

Serious though......I bought S&W stock at levels a year or so ago (above today's current price) because I think more and more LE agencies are going to make the jump for the reasons above.

The LASO deal is the first I have heard of any problems and that was a purchase of 49 guns?

I CCW a Kimber compact daily. Love it. Don't have anything against Glock's really. But I trained on 1911's and want to carry/shoot what i trained on.

I do remember shooting a 92 a couple of times. I liked the way it felt, but don't remember anythign about the controls. My only problem is that is shoots the .38 S&W SHORT. .45 adds to my confidence level a LOT.
