My first handgun was an Italian made Beretta 92FS. Still have it. Have not shot it for a few years.

I might sound like a wimp but that double action 1st trigger pull, followed by single action, would not give me a lot of confidence. (especially on what might be a critical 1st shot) I prefer a consistent trigger pull. Which you get with SA or DAO.

YMMV

My dad bought a 92FS from LASD back in 1991 and gave it to me as gift. I've fired over 10k rounds through it since then and never had a problem with it. I recall seeing a video a while back, which I can't find now, when the military was testing this gun and they were shooting it while pouring sand on top of it. Now if you haven't seen a 92FS up close, the entire top of the slide is open. So all of that sand was pouring down in to it. The Beretta kept firing. Plus this is a 9mm, so it's cheap to shoot when you can find ammo.

92 G is the way to go, for myself.
Resistance is futile. Tupperware is here to stay, just issue them Glocks!!

Where did this memo come from? I have a hard time believing it.

My M&P40 hasn't given me any trouble what so ever and I've put A LOT of ammo through it of all makes. In my opinion, it is far superior to a Glock in comfort and fit. Unfortunately I bought the Glock before the M&P.

BTW, my carry rig is a Kimber.

I have to agree that the Kimber is VERY nice to shoot but I can't imagine a sound argument that it is more reliable than a Glock. Bottom line, Glock may be plastic and ugly but it goes BANG every time. I also own a 92FS. Great gun, fun to shoot but not as reliable and too big to carry

A 1911, for a specialized unit is fine, but normal duty carry, it is just too finicky of a gun and needs a lot of maintenance, and most officers are just not going to dedicate the needed maintenance of a 1911.

LASD has been issuing beretta's since the late 80's.

I doubt it ever will give you trouble. One instructor got better than 50K though his M&P9 with one cleaning. I suspect that with all of the demand right now that LASD got one that slipped though with a bad barrel. When I hear as many hysterical reports of M&P failures as I do equally hysterical reports of Glock kabooms I'll grow mildly concerned. In the meantime I'll enjoy my 3 M&Ps even if I shoot 1911s a heck of a lot better. Of course I've been shooting 1911s forever and M&Ps only a short time.

Too expensive for a dept with almost 10k sworn.

HK is overpriced IMHO.

I have no experience with them, but have heard good things about them. I could just be a certain lot or maybe recent machining changes that have turned out a faulty product.

An interesting thread from TFL. An LA area officer talking about his department moving to M&P40s. Unfortunately it doesn't say what agency.

LASD can carry the HK 45.

After LASD tested the M&P's at least 16 of the firearms training officers bought them with their own money some bought two.

The 92fs is the highest fail rental firearm at two of the ranges where I shoot. They wouldn't have them except for local law enforcement coming in to practice.

LAPD pulled the Glock 21 at one time also.

SIS used Glocks before the rest of LAPD were authorized to use them, replacing the 4506.

LAPD also had problems with Ranger 45 ammo not expanding. This was a couple or three years ago.

Default What makes it a horse race....

These threads always make me smile ... personal preference is subjective ... I own one of everything ... if $ are a serious consideration, then Glocks are a great option ... I used to carry a Glock 17 when I was in rough country and expected bad guys ... if it got banged up or scratched it never bothered me (it stared out ugly any way) ... then I switched to a HK .45 for the same duty ... again just a great tool....

However, aesthetics matter to me if I CCWd I would only carry my Ultra CDP ... choice is nice ... shoot what you want ... practice, practice, practice.
