Default Pizza Hut unfriendly to CCW employees

I found this in the NRA's Armed Citizen column.

DES MOINES, Iowa -- A pizza delivery driver, who police said defended himself by shooting a robber who attacked him, was fired from his job on Friday.
James Spiers, 38, confirmed to KCCI that he is no longer employed by Pizza Hut. Spiers said he was given two months severance pay and was offered help finding a new job by the company.
Spiers told KCCI in an interview two weeks ago that he was not angry with his employer about the possibility of being let go and said he hadn't decided whether to return to the job even if he wasn't fired.
According to court documents, Melanie Stout, 18, called in a pizza order to an apartment building at 2050 SE King Ave. Police said her fiancee, Kenneth Jimmerson, 19, was waiting in the lobby with a gun when Spiers arrived at 10:39 p.m. on March 28.
Police said Jimmerson tried to rob Spiers at gunpoint. During a struggle, Spiers pulled out his own gun and opened fire. Spiers shot Jimmerson several times, in what police said was a justified shooting. Jimmerson survived was sent to the hospital and a couple days later moved to the Polk County Jail.
Though Spiers had a permit to carry his gun, Pizza Hut suspended its long-time delivery driver.
A corporate spokesman told KCCI two weeks ago that Spiers violated company policy by carrying a gun. Pizza Hut suspended him, while the company gathered more information before deciding the fate of his job.

You can let Pizza Hut know what you think by responding here: http://www.pizzahut.com/contactus/Co...m.aspx?l1=2024

My response:
"It is my understanding that Pizza Hut believes they know better how an individual should protect himself from assault. The case of James Spiers was handled very poorly by you company. This man was carrying a concealed handgun in conformance with state law, and successfully used that handgun to save his life.
Those individuals who go through the effort to obtain a concealed carry permit and exercise their rights are the most law abiding people you will ever come across.
Through your actions in this matter I have concluded that Pizza Hut does NOT care about their employees and only about the possibility of a lawsuit. Or is management of the anti firearm mentality? If this proves to be the case, then shame on you for thinking you know better about how a person should live their life. We do not go around telling that you must be armed therefore do not tell us not to be.
Shame on Pizza Hut"

I don't believe Pizza Hut had any other recourse but to terminate the employee. They "might" have know that several employees are CCW holders and just look the other way. If they condone the carrying of firearms, and the shoot was deemed wrongful, they have the deep pockets. They gave him severance pay and offered to help find him another job...I think they knew, and are glad their ex-driver is still alive. Business is business.

The driver saved his own life, he'll get a better job.

Friends don't let friends eat Pizza Hut!

That being said, most employers would do the same thing... without the severance and offer find the emplyee a new job. I'm sure in their mind, they had to let him go...

I put my 2 cents in on Pizza hut's web site too. I believe in being able to protect yourself in a risky job like that since they carry money. What about the pizza guy in Wisconsin who went through the same thing? Didn't he ultimately win his case in court?

If I deliverd Pissa or any food at any time I Would pack heat and protect myself from a robbery. Straw Hat did not want the liability if that badguy sues em for millions.Lets hope the jury will not award the badguy any money and the media hail the delivery person a hero as he took out another badguy.

Uhh....has anyone read the latest American Rifleman? They have another pizza delivery driver shoot. The driver was attacked by several teenagers who were intent on beating him...and wouldnt' let him leave. He drew and fired, killing one. He was justified and the pizza joint he worked for, made a statement about keeping him as an employee...unlike Pizza Hut.

I read it. IIRC the pizza place is a mom & pop type. Wish they had more of 'em.
I haven't spent a nickle at Pizza Hut since they fired that guy.

Read that one last night. They did not mention if ti was a mom and pop place or a chain, but good for them either way. The other one was about a gas station robbery/deposits story, and after the shooter was determined to have used his weapon for self defense, he gave away gas 5 cents cheaper.
