Thumbs up Univ. of Southern California- CCW, ok!

I am on USC campus at least once a week- volunteer teaching and other academic related reasons. Reading posts about most California campuses having amibiguous CCW policies, I had to get clarification from USC.

I was told by Capt. Steve Alegre, Captain - USC Police Community Relations that: USC school policy for CCW could not supercede California CCW law. (He verbally gave me permission to quote him on this) He went on to say that with his 30 years combined experience with Santa Ana PD and LAPD, that he was confident about the validity of his answer.

Not sure about a currently enrolled USC student's rights even if they had a CCW.... - I didn't ask about that. Sorry I had to post here. I couldn't add to the "Where you can/can't carry" section.

Bottom Line: CCW at USC... Good to go! GO TROJANS! FIGHT ON!

I carry a gun because:
* I can't carry a cop.
* OK, OK.. So the cop can walk, but I have to carry a lot of donuts to keep him close by.

A school policy can never supercede state law.

Isn't USC a private university and as such, can't they establish their own policy regarding CCW on campus just as any private business can do?

Yes, USC is a private university. I just needed clarification from Campus police about school policy pertaining to persons with academic affiliations. This current article from the campus publication had me a bit concerned.

I'm just glad that Campus Police see thing a bit differently. Yay for the good guys- CCW holders.

I go to a community college and am very curious as to what the college President would say if I were to ask permission to carry on campus, but as I see it, without notifying them, I am legal, but possibly in violation of school policy, but if I am told not to bring it on campus, then I hit a gray area as far as trespassing goes.

I agree that it is a good call by the campus PD chief.

I will probably write an email inquiring what the policy is, but I am going to wait until I have all my credits

Since many community colleges have a police academy/POST program, you might find that the district policy reads something like "firearms are not allowed without authorization from a police agency."

Would be worth a look.

I was authorized by my Sheriff to carry everywhere in the state, including school grounds. How many school shootings does there have to be before they allow people to carry their weapons there for protection? How many innocent people have to die before the knuckleheads who dreamt up the GFSZ realize they just empowered the crazies and put a big red arrow around the school that says "slaughter zone?" GFSZ. WHAT A CROCK!!

ing idiots!

+1. Also, as far as I know, community colleges aren't private property so they can't put restrictions on what would otherwise be legal activity.

It's not the campus police you need to worry about. If the Administration has a "no weapons" policy in their employees' manual or student rules, then that is where the Administration will take action. You won't get arrested, because your CCW is valid. However, you could be fired or expelled because you violated the Administrations rules. I believe this was mentioned in one of our FAQs, which are locked because they are informational postings, not discussion threads. Here is the one related to CCW on campus:

Thats how I understand it. As far as I could find in the school policies posted online, it said something to the effect of; no dangerous weapons without the permission of the school President. I imagine that is how they get by the POST issue.

I was under the impression that as a private University USC had a public safety department and not a police department.
