Here's a Sac Bee article announcing this: Sheriff John McGinness announces he will not seek re-election In the article, it was announced that Elk Grove City Councilmen Jim Cooper (also an SSD Captain) is going to run. Apparently Sheriff McGinness "knows of two other(s)" who are/might run also.

This might get interesting...

Several candidates have announced, Former Sac PD Chief, a couple of internal captains, and some deputies have asked ret. Sheriff Lou Blanos to run. Should prove interesting. Several articles in the Sac Bee Northern California local news and information from The Sacramento Bee - sacbee.com

Yes, Retired Sheriff Lou Blanas (according to this article Right Here) is considering a run at re-election. What I want to know is if there would be any term limits imposed upon him as he was elected twice, or if that is only for the legislators in the dome downtown...

There are no term limits for Sheriff and many other local government positions. One sheriff in CA was in for like 37 years, quite a few do 12 to 16 years (3-4) terms. City Councils and Board of supervisors are in until they quit, retire or get defeated, that can also be for multiple terms.

'Catch & Release' is only for BG's that aren't so bad.

I believe that here in OC BOS are term limited. We might be the only county.

That could be, generally, city councils and counties don't put term limits in place.
