Sheriff’s concealed gun policies draws Republican fire
March 27th, 2009, 6:00 am · 12 Comments · posted by NORBERTO SANTANA JR.

Sheriff Sandra Hutchens’ move to curtail the number of concealed weapons permits on the streets of Orange County is drawing more Republican fire.

Over at Red County blog, Central Committee member Allan Bartlett has penned a fascinating column on an upcoming discussion Apr. 4 at the local GOP headquarters about smacking Hutchens on the wrist for her approach to the issue.

And Republican heavy-hitter Mike Schroeder has launched the first volley in an expected legal attack on Hutchens after she sent him a letter advising him that his pistol-packing days are numbered.

In his letter, Schroeder tells the sheriff that she’s messing with the wrong Second Amendment supporter and sets up the groundwork for an interesting legal battle.

Schroeder notes that Hutchens does have virtually unrestricted ability to issue concealed weapons permits. But once they are issued, she just can’t take them away.

One thing to keep in mind. Dealing with Schroeder doesn’t just have legal consequences. The Republican king-maker is also known for getting involved in elections.

My colleague, Martin Wisckol, already has a post noting that Schroeder is co-chairing a recall effort against Rep. Assemblyman Anthony Adams from Hesperia who supported the recent tax increase.

So keep an eye on this one…

I kinda wish she woulda pulled his permit a few months ago. Looks like we're going to see a lot of action in a short period of time! I like his comment about that the Sheriff has "virtually unrestricted ability to issue concealed weapons permits. But once they are issued, she just can’t take them away". This goes to my question about revoking a contract earlier. You go Mike!!
