Default Ex-O.C. Sheriff Carona guilty on 1 count, cleared on 5

Ex-O.C. Sheriff Carona guilty on 1 count, cleared on 5 - Los Angeles Times

Quote:
Former Orange County Sheriff Michael S. Carona was found guilty today of one felony count of witness tampering and cleared of five other charges
Apparently he isn't quite the boogyman that he's been made out to be by the current OCSD administration....

Sarcasm, eh?

But for the fact the witch hunt had begun, there would have been no charges for witness tampering. He shouldn't have done that, it was VERY poor decision making on his part, and I don't for a second condone it - however desperate people do desperate things. Remember, all of the stuff that Corona and Heidl were talking about on that tape are things that he was found NOT GUILTY of, despite Heidl's testimony against Corona. I'm not a lawyer, but this certainly raises a question in my mind as to whether or not those items being discussed could even be considered witness tampering now?

Also, this charge will be appealed. Based on the above, I would say there is a very good chance it will be overturned.

All that being said, my point was that he was not found guilty of abusing the power of his office as alleged by the federal prosecutors, which is one of Sandy's big arguments when it comes to the CCW issue.

I would be very surprised if this verdict wasn't/isn't appealed. Witness tampering is a process crime... if the appeal shows that the evidence wasn't kosher to use...

Wow! This sounds like the prosecution built a case out of almost nothing, at least partially entrapped Carona, went all in w/Haidl, and lost.

Not good for the prosecution when your star witness was, himself, a bigger crook than the defendant. I hope he wins his appeal.
