in 1996, my now daughter-in-law was a CT (Cryptologic Technician) which required the highest clearance a Naval enlisted person can get. When she was based in DC, numerous CTs lost their clearances and hence their rate, for what we might consider minor reasons:
- DUIs
- Losing DL because of speeding
- Financial problems
- Gambling
- Dating or having friendships with foreign nationals
No reviews, no explanations, no slack. One day they were CTs in real nice jobs in DC; the next day they were SM (Signalmen) on harbor tugs in Adak.
Early in my career, I was a systems engineer for a large computer company. One of the customers I supported was a Lockheed plant that made weapons systems radars. It took a month before I was allowed inside the computer room. They did background checks on me and gave me a Secret clearance. That allowed me to be in the computer area only but I could not be in the computer room whenever they were running any test simulations. I had to be escorted to any of the other areas of the plant by a person w/a Top Secret clearance.
When one of their programmers lost his DL for DUI, they took away his clearance and transferred him out of the plant to a less sensitive position.
