Anaheim’s Craig Hunter enters sheriff’s race - Total Buzz : The Orange County Register
Anaheim’s Craig Hunter enters sheriff’s race November 17th, 2009, 6:18 pm posted by Tony Saavedra, Register investigative reporter The race for Orange County Sheriff is looking pretty familiar with the addition Tuesday of Anaheim Deputy Police Chief Craig Hunter. With Sheriff Sandra Hutchens and former Lt. Bill Hunt already in the contest, Hunter increases the deja vu. All three were finalists for the job last year, with the Board of Supervisors appointing Hutchens to the top cop position. In announcing his candidacy, Hunter said, “Our next sheriff should have a familiarity with our county’s diverse communities and unique needs. They must also restore integrity and trust in the position.” Hunter oversees daily police operations in Anaheim, commanding 800 officers and a $120 million budget. Hunter so far is mum on how he falls with the gun lobby and handing out concealed weapons permits. Hutchens has created controversy by restricting distribution of the permits, while Hunt has called for them to be given out more liberally. Now we just need to hear from former Assistant Sheriff Jack Anderson.

Press PRESS For Immediate Release November 17, 2009 Anaheim Deputy Chief Craig Hunter to Run for Orange County Sheriff (Anaheim) – Today, Anaheim Deputy Chief Craig Hunter announced his candidacy for Orange County Sheriff, bringing to the race a long and accomplished career of public safety leadership. “I’ve spent my law enforcement career here in Orange County, and I am convinced our County is the best place in America to raise a family and build a business,” said Chief Hunter. “Our next Sheriff should have a familiarity with our County’s diverse communities and unique needs. They must also restore integrity and trust in the position and ensure that our Sheriff’s Department is a model for efficiency and effectiveness in using taxpayer dollars. As Sheriff, that’s what I’ll work to do, just as I’ve done in Anaheim for the past thirty years.” Integrity, leadership, and professionalism are the hallmarks of Chief Hunter’s impressive thirty-year record of law enforcement – a record that includes nearly twenty years of police management and supervision. One of the most respected members of Orange County’s law enforcement community, Chief Hunter oversees all daily police operations of California’s tenth largest city, including the department’s nearly 800 full time and volunteer members and a $120 million budget. Through polices developed under Chief Hunter’s tenure, Anaheim has earned national acclaim for homeland security and community policing, and the city is recognized as the safest among California’s ten largest cities. Chief Hunter has also implemented numerous cost saving procedures that have streamlined spending, eliminated waste, and created more efficient use of taxpayer dollars. Chief Hunter holds a Master’s Degree in Criminal Justice from Chapman University. He is also a graduate of the FBI National Academy, Command College, POST Leadership Institute, and the Delinquency Control Institute at USC. Additionally, Chief Hunter holds a community college teaching credential, and he has lectured and been published on topics including tourist policing, crisis management, terrorism, and leadership. Chief Hunter began his law enforcement career at the age of nineteen as a reserve police officer for the City of Garden Grove. In 1982 Chief Hunter joined the Anaheim Police Department, where over the next twenty-seven years he served in a variety of specialized assignments including jail operations, personnel, budget, internal affairs, narcotics, gangs, career criminal apprehension, SWAT, robbery, labor relations, aviation, and special events. Craig and Lisa Hunter live in Yorba Linda and are busy raising their four children. Chief Hunter is a volunteer Scoutmaster with the Boy Scouts of America and has two sons who are Eagle Scouts. Chief Hunter also spends his weekends officiating high school and college football. He has hired veteran political strategist Tim Clark of ClarkDavis Associates to head up the campaign and experienced fundraising consultant Anne Dunsmore to lead the finance team. ###

Wow this is great news to finally have some options! I hope this announcement only pushes more potential candidates to come join race... although I have to say I'm disappointed and feel that some "pro-gun/ccw" organizations prematurely endorse candidates. I don't know about you guys and gals out there but before I purchase a gun I do some research, I ask people their experiences with the gun, I even rent one at a local range to test it out before making the final purchase much like I dated a few women before I decided to "endorse" one. I really wish they could at least wait like most professional organizations do (e.g. fire & police officers associations) to hear out the candidates before choosing to support/endorse them (e.g. Forum) I can hardly wait to get a Sheriffs Candidate Forum set-up where all the candidates can face off and I'm willing to donate towards renting and setting up a location. I have tons of questions to submit and not all them CCW related.
