Default CCWI was correct. OCSD does not exist!

For years, Greg (CCWI) has been correcting me. Sheriff Office, there is no such thing as sheriff department. Any elected person holds office, departments have appointed people. As defined by law.

Even CA Sheriff uses office.
California State Sheriffs' Association

California State Sheriffs' Association

The Office of Sheriff is one of antiquity and is the oldest law enforcement office known within the common law system and has always been accorded great dignity and trust. The Sheriffs of California are elected and are constitutional officers in the Constitution of the State of California.

This months issue of the CA. Sheriff Association has a article addressing just that subject. It cites government code and court cases, the same ones CCWI has been saying for years.

Well, I'm not surprised that Greg is right (no offense to you Mark).

That's what we've been trying to tell Hutchens for the past year. She holds and elective office, and that means she has a constituency.

It would appear that at this point we do have a Sheriffs Department here in OC. Hutchens WAS appointed, not elected. I guess that will change next year though.

Correct, the office held is Sheriff, the Sheriff's dept, is the whole dept.

Confusing I know, a lot of the smaller agencies call themselves offices still.

Uh, CCWI and Gladiator are saying that it should be called "Office", not "Department"

First... When as CCWI ever been wrong?

Second... I volunteer time with Project 999, a charitable fund for LEO's injured or killed in the line of duty. It's a multi agency group with reps from about every LE agency in socal. Everyone within that group refers to OCSD as "The Sheriff's Office..." Or the "S.O.," for short... And most LEO's from other OC agencies refer to OCSD as "Station 18."

About the only time I see it as OCSD is when it's written on flyers, banners and 999 literature... But in conversation, it's always the S O, or 18.

Maybe it should be called so, but it's not, some counties call them Office; usually the smaller agencies, and other call them Dept's, the office held is always Sheriff.
