All my children are aware that Dad carries. My two oldest daughters were aware of the fact that I was taking the classes, and had gone to the interview, both are also aware that it is to be kept a family secret. As a family, our two main sources of recreation are shooting and kayaking. All my children shoot regularly at the range. My two oldest are now into trap and bird hunting.

The two youngest discovered dad’s secret on their own. One walked into our room to tell me dinner was ready while I was changing my shirt, the other decided to attack me from behind the couch as I came through the door, resulting in the unpleasant realization that there was something hard underneath dad's shirt, and it’s not a cell phone. This lead to the discussion about what concealed carry was, what it meant for our family, and why it must remain a family secret. I notice that they now hug me on weak side to avoid the head vs. 1911 collision.

As a family that has numerous firearms, my wife and I have spent many hours reinforcing the notion that our guns are no ones business. They are not to be discussed with anyone at school or in the neighborhood. We also have taken several classes on defense in the home and have spent quite a bit of time working with our children on “what to do if”.
