Certainly you'd want to stay away from a race gun, no optics or compensators, no death-head grips, no lasers.
Certainly a .38 revolver is good and respectable. A 1911? Is a Glock recognized by a wide enough swath of non-shooters? Would wood grips help? Heck - maybe a pink LadySmith?
I agree with what several people have said - carry the same ammo that your issuing agency carries, hopefully T-series.

.45 is used by LAPD and a bunch of other LE agencies....
I carry the same calibers that every Federal Law Enforcement Agency carries (.357sig/.40s&w) so Im good nationwide.
As far as I know, not a single LE agency ANYWHERE in CA carries the 10mm???
