OC Newbie: I may be a bit late to the party and I'm a bit far North... but Welcome! If your hands are about the same size as CCWI's, you shouldn't find it too difficult to find a pistol that fits you. Like others have said, fit is what matters. Your pistol should feel comfortable in your hand. In my case, a few years ago I shot a S&W 3906. It's a single stack 9mm. It felt small and the trigger guard kept rubbing a knuckle of my middle finger. It was clearly too small, though I could shoot it decently. Personally, I prefer a Glock 23 or an "O Frame". Both fit me OK and I can shoot them decently well. I can't recommend highly enough that you should get out and shoot a bunch of different pistols. Do that before you buy. Do not be frightened about the calibers. Most of the typical self-defense calibers won't beat you up too badly unless the pistol itself is too light.
Once again, WELCOME!!!!!
