An armed robber who is serious has other options to defeat it. But again would probably pick an easier target.
So bottom line it sounds like most the banks don't worry too much about the metal detector going off on the average ordinary looking person.

The Wells Fargo in my area has not been robbed in 4 years since they put th Man Trap in and it used to be one of the most robbed banks in San Bernardino County before it was installed.
