Penetration has never been a problem with an AR. Well, that's not true. Lack of penetration has never been a problem.
Have to keep in mine the AR-15/ 5.56mm round was designed to be an accurate target rifle for the Air Force before it was ever adopted for anything else. Then the thinking was that a wounded soldier is a bigger drain on enemy resources (it really is) than a dead one so it was never changed.
Of course, that's only true if you're fighting an enemy who actually makes an effort to keep it's soldiers alive. When fighting against individuals with no body armor and who would rather die trying than stop when wounded, the 5.56mm isn't the best tool for the job.
My personal opinion is that 6.8 SPC is a FAR better round but it's just so damn expensive.
