Going by the letter, you should have told her immediately. Again, the terms of the license for OC doesn't say "official contact" it says for "any reason". It also says you must announce "immediately".

I'm not really saying you did anything wrong here, because I probably would have done the same thing. Just trying to point out what the terms of the license states. People keep saying "official contact" when that is not what it says. But if you break this down even further you can also say that you should only announce when "contacted by a police officer", not when you contact them. And you can also say that you didn't need to tell her at all because she is a Deputy Sheriff and not a police officer. Yes, there is a difference.

Common sense will dictate what you will do - e.g., when it is safe to hand them your license, when you should or shouldn't tell them. I would only have done it at the point where she asked for my drivers license, because it is "safe" for her and me to reach in my pocket and get my license. Or if she asked the question "Are there any guns in the car", before I am able to show her my license.
