Good question and certainly some good opinions.
My parents are unaware of my CCW and passion for firearms. They know I have been shooting before, hence the sillowette on my office door. But they are such old fashioned and they don't quite understand the risk i take everyday for the need to be armed. When I feel its time to tell them, I will.
Its just like when i started my business years ago. I never told them for 6 months because they would have just told me I would fail. I didn't need to hear that from them.
On the other hand my closests friends; some happen to be LEO's know and they support my choice.
As for a date, I would tell them right away. If they didn't like the fact that i was armed, I wouldn't want to go any further unless it involved. . . .
