Ok so to be able to carry while fishing you need to:

1. Keep gun and ammo locked as per transportation gun laws untill at your destination.
2. Hip carry openly with magazine out of the weapon in a separate holster.

Seems worth it to me. I've been fishing up and down the Yuba, and yes I've had a run in with mountain lions. they never charged me, but it really stinks to sit there and hope that your hikingstick is more powerful then their hunger.
