Answers:
You go out to dinner with your friends. Your friends are people you like, get along with and share common values with.

You take advice from people you have known for a long time and trust. How do you come to trust people? You have known them for a long time.

You get elected in LA by being liberal at heart and in private, no matter what you portray in public. If you are elected and want to stay elected in LA you are tough on CRIME! Guns and Ammo = CRIME in most Sheeples minds.

The Appointed Sheriff has worked, palled around with, made friends with, taken advice from, and observed Politcians, that are residents of LA. She can't believe that OC is any different.
She is not comfortable around any other "types" of people. She is going through the stages of denial. First bewilderment. Then comes irratation. Followed by trying to change the local environment instead of living as a member of her new culture. Sometimes this manifests into living in small sub cultural enclaves sorrounded by like minded people and trying to ignore the natives. Then comes Anger at the inability to effect change. Lastly comes delusional self destructive behavior, Followed by the total melt down. At this last point if you have anything left, acceptance sets in. If you have lost everything, denial again becomes your friend or you seek professional help before the cycle begins to repeat in ever quicking motion.

This lack of cultural acceptance is very common in rural areas and countries that become new retirement havens. The retirees move to an area and try to remake their new home into a smaller version of their old home town. It drives the natives crazy. It how the term "Ugly American" got it's origin in foreign countries. It is also the sign of an inflexible, egotistical, and self centered person.

Just as I was formulating a reply to your post about 2nd home owners moving to the mountains to 'get away' from the city and bringing their comforts (sod, for a yard full of grass, etc) you used your retiree parable.

They do not understand they are bring with them the same things they are trying to escape from and at the same time destroying what they came to enjoy.

Your statement carries much truth.
